While I love life in general, I have to say Spring is one of my favorite times of the year! It’s a time of growth and blossoms, a time of birth and renewal, there are all the smells that come along with the melting snow and then the new growth coming up through the ground. It’s a time when people, groups, and organizations, start planning for the coming year. People are out raking and planting, dusting off the cleats and golf clubs, and making sure that fishing reel is working well, people get out and start doing all those things they have been waiting to do all winter.
Spring is also a time to give thanks, to give thanks to our creator, whoever that might be, to give thanks to those who are close to us for all they do and have done to help us both in the good times and the trying times.
As Publisher of the Parkview News, as we draw near to our ninth year anniversary of producing and publishing our little community newspaper, I want to give thanks to everyone who has been involved in the paper over the years and have made it possible for us to continue.
There are two people in particular who have been steadfast in their support of the publication. They are Dawn Burgess, who has been with us from the first year. Dawn came to us with years of experience, having been with the Chronicle Herald, originally to do sales, but has developed into a fantastic accounts payable/receivable person, handling all our bookkeeping needs, along with sales. The other person is our graphic designer and layout designer, Corey Dickinson. Corey is amazing at what he does and a complete pleasure to work with. I have never met anyone so efficient and perceptive when it comes to design and layout.
Then there are our writers. Devonna Edwards, who has been with us for many years. Her historical columns are so informative and descriptive, always receiving positive comments and accolades from our readers. John Moore, another long-time columnist, says it like it is, and can write down-home heart-warming stories or columns that provoke people to examine a wide range of issues, receiving a wide range of responses. Emily Wei started with us writing the Halifax West High School column. Now winding up her second year in university, Emily has developed into a seasoned writer, always insightful and interesting topical columns. Kevin Natividad has been doing our social media/ on-line posting for a few years now and always manages to find interesting content in addition to our monthly ads and columns.
While politicians do not get a lot of positive recognition and reinforcement these days, I certainly want to thank MP Lena Diab (who started writing with us when she was an MLA), and MP Darrell Samson both who have been long-time contributors, sharing interesting information and activities important to our readers. Many thanks to MLA Rafah DiCostanzo, and Councillor Kathryn Morse and Councillor Iona Stoddard, who are all contributors from time to time and more recently, Premier Tim Houston, who has started a monthly column.
To all our writers past and present, and to all our community groups and organizations, who have contributed over the years, to anyone who has suggested topics for us to write about and to everyone who provides your feedback, good or bad, many thanks for making our paper more interesting for our readers.
That brings me to you, our readers. Our desire is to bring you a paper that is local, that has articles and columns that you find interesting, and that for a short time each month we bring some joy and enlightenment into your life!
Thank you one and all for making our little community paper possible! Happy Spring!
