Emancipation Day is a significant and solemn occasion that invites us to consider the long and agonizing history of slavery in addition to the current fight for equality and freedom. This day, which is observed globally in a variety of ways, serves as a reminder of the bravery and resiliency of people who opposed the cruel system of slavery.
August 1st, 2021, was proclaimed as Emancipation Day by Nova Scotia, a day set aside to commemorate and remember the common history of African Americans being enslaved in Canada.
The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 was signed into law on August 1, 1834, thus abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire.
The systemic anti-Black racism that still affects individuals of African ancestry today has its roots in slavery. Observing Emancipation Day offers a chance to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of people of African origin throughout the region, as well as to continue having meaningful conversations about inclusion and race relations.

Halifax is committed to tackling the anti-Black prejudice that persists in both our community service areas and our own organization.
Regional Council approved the framework for creating a municipal Anti-Black Racism (ABR) Strategy and Action Plan in order to assist with these efforts. This project never ends.
The municipality is also starting the Anti-Black Racism Grants program this year to enable African American communities and citizens to confront anti-Black racism through grassroots, community-led projects and activities. Entries are accepted from August 1 to September 30, 2024.
